Hola, I’m Sarah

My name is Sarah Luan and I am a rising sophomore at Rice University. Currently, I plan on majoring in Electrical Engineering and minoring in Engineering Design, but I am still possibly considering other majors like Math or Computer Science. At Rice, I am a co-captain of the Women’s Club Volleyball team and am also on the merchandise committee at my residential college (Jones). Besides playing volleyball, I also like painting, drawing, or hanging out with friends in the Jones quad in my free time. One thing I made that I am proud of is my ENGI 120 project from my freshman spring semester. Our project involved improving on a previous prototype, called the UVisor, to ensure that inhaled and exhaled air was sanitized using UV light. This project made me more interested in how different aspects of engineering can be applied to the medical field, which is why I became interested in the iSEED program in Costa Rica. This summer, I hope to learn more about how current medical devices or processes work and how they can be improved. From ENGI 200 and ENGI 350, my goal is to gain more knowledge on the entire process of engineering design, from identifying problems to prototyping to implementing the project in the real world.
