The Adventure Begins!

My name is Hannah and I am a rising sophomore studying mechanical engineering from Sid Richardson college. I ended up choosing Rice based on what I heard from students! They described a very supportive community full of culture. I was also drawn in by the residential college system and the engineering program. Engineering has been a passion of mine for quite some time. When I was younger my parents decided to call my questions, “Hannah questions”, because I often asked questions that couldn’t be answered. I love problem solving and hands on work which lead me to an interest in robotics in middle school. From then on I realized that I wanted to go into mechanical engineering so I could turn my interest for problem solving into real world change.

In addition to engineering, I love playing jazz music, baking with my sister, lacrosse, and traveling. If I didn’t have to worry about work or studying, I would definitely travel around the world as much as possible. I am very excited to explore Amsterdam and Paris because of my passion for seeing new places. I also chose to study abroad in this program because I thought the design thinking class would help with framing the design process in a new way.

I grew up outside of Boston so I love cities that have bodies of water in them. My family lived along the Charles River the summer before we moved to Massachusetts and it was always fun seeing sail boats go by. I am very excited to explore the canals in Amsterdam and hopefully do a tour. Amsterdam also has amazing art and different museums that I can’t wait to experience. We also just had stroopwafles and French fries which were delicious! I love enjoying different foods and trying out new restaurants.

When I explore a new city I usually spend the first few days walking around to get my bearings and stop when I see something that draws my attention. I love the feeling of exploring without a specific destination in mind. I then will ask friends for recommendations or look online and make a list of everything I want to do while I am visiting. After that, I will plan out when I want to do certain activities so that I make sure everything will work out. I have been following the same pattern here in Amsterdam and am now in the planning phase with other people in the program!
