Week 2 Academic Recap
This week was a massive change of pace from the past-faced and intense Medical Innovation Bootcamp. This week, we started and finished ENGI 350 instruction in a classroom at ULACIT. In this class, we focused on the beginning and ending stages of the engineering design process: project sketches and testing plans.
For our project sketches, we picked one of the needs statements we generated from the Needs Finding Workshop and researched the background of our project. My project sketch involved proposing to develop a method to protect light-sensitive medication during administration in a low-resource setting.
After generating project sketches, we learned about testing to ensure verification and validation of the device. We generated extensive testing plans for former OEDK projects which involved different types of experiments and Likert scales to measure the success of the device. Erin, Madison, and I devised a testing plan for a prosthetic that allows an individual with symbrachydactyly (a condition of short fingers that may be webbed or joined) to play basketball.
This week, we also attended a talk from the “Originator of Industry 4.0” Henrik von Scheel. It was a polarizing talk, as he proposed the idea that individuals under 21 should not be able to use AI. After his talk, he came to our classroom to continue talking to us about his views and background, and I appreciated that we were able to have a discussion with him, even though we hold different opinions.
Week 2 Social Recap
In addition to our usual social activities of cooking and pilates, we attended some really fun events this week.
First, we all attended a painting class hosted by Selina. This class was after a long day of ENGI 350 instruction, and it was relaxing to just paint, chat, and unwind. We also met some other students who were during a study abroad program!
In order to celebrate our last day of ENGI 350, Dr. Wettergreen took us out to go bowling. I was on track to finally win my first game of bowling ever, but Sumin overtook me in the last frame 🙁
I’m excited for what’s ahead in ENGI 200!
