kenya three, featuring alex (da baby) jr.

The last two weeks of iSeed we tackled EDES 200 (design studio), working to solve the real-life problems we identified in 350. I was on team EyeCU with Alex and Sherry, and we were tasked with designing a low-cost screening device for retinopathy of prematurity in low-resource settings. We worked through EDP tables, CAD designs, and coding software (shoutout Alex) to create a final product we ended up being really proud of. There were long days, but they were filled with laughter and community – whether that was wandering around a mall with our joint baby (Alex da baby jr., because he’s a spitting image of Alex), trying new food places (chapati is the best), or having theme songs of the day (baby by justin bieber, sticking with our theme). I learned so much in this class, not only about the engineer design process, but more importantly about how important teamwork, communication, and designing to your enviornment is. I’m so grateful we got to visit the hospitals ahead of time to truly understand how our devices would potentially be implemented, and the issues we had to solve for.

I’m writing this post a couple weeks late (whoops) but I’m already missing the classes and the amazing group I was with. Nairobi is such a unique city, and I had an amazing time exploring it with all of the new friends I made. I have so many memories I’ll cherish – from classes to chugging espresso martini’s at dinner to having our very own podcast – and I hope that one day we’ll all get to reunite again. And I know that I’ll definitely be coming back to Nairobi one day.
Below: It’s all about the friends you make along the way 🙂
